Shohei Ohtani makes history again with 4 straight games pitching allow no runs and 10+ strikeouts in each game. Named to All-Star starter as DH

Ohtani makes more history with incredible 4-game stretch on mound

Wednesday was just another historic day at the office for Shohei Ohtani.

The Angels superstar singlehandedly dismantled the Miami Marlins in Los Angeles’ 5-2 victory, extending his incredible recent stretch as a pitcher into record territory. Ohtani allowed just two hits and one unearned run with 10 strikeouts during his gem.

It’s the fourth straight start in which Ohtani didn’t allow an earned run. He’s just the seventh pitcher since 1901 to go 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 40-plus strikeouts in a four-start stretch during one season, according to Stathead. Ohtani and Johan Santana are the only American League pitchers to do this in the divisional era, per Angels PR.

Additionally, Ohtani joined Clayton KershawJacob deGrom, and John Lackey as the only pitchers in the last 50 years to have at least 10 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in three straight starts, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.

Over the course of his last four starts, Ohtani lowered his ERA by over a full run – from 3.64 following his June 9 start to 2.44 – while his WHIP dropped from 1.12 to a sparkling 0.99. Only eight qualified pitchers currently have a lower ERA than the reigning AL MVP.

Ohtani also drove in two runs and scored once during a 1-for-4 night at the plate. By doing so, he became the first player ever to record 10 strikeouts as a pitcher, drive in two runs, and steal a base in the same game, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
