MLS Cup Playoffs: Lee Nguyen defeats Columbus Crew

Surprise, surprise (not) as the New England Revolution continue their hot streak by defeating the Columbus Crew at Gillette Stadium by a score of 3 – 1 (7 – 3 overall). Really, though, it was Major League Soccer MVP candidate Lee Nguyen who was the star on the night. He fueled the offense with a goal and an assist and was just overall a huge pest for the Crew, preventing any kind of buildup in the midfield.

Combined with Daigo Kobayashi, the Revolution completely controlled the midfield and found gaping holes in the Crew defense for both midfielders to slot passes to.

The Revs opened the scoring just before the half when they found some possession in the box from a chipped ball over the top. Teal Bunbury did well to hold the ball while Nguyen made his run from out of the box. Lee did well to bring the lobbed pass down smoothly and sent a low shot past a streaking Steve Clark. It was a great team play from the Revolution and some sloppy defending from the Crew, not putting pressure on Bunbury while he held the ball and ball watching as Nguyen made his run unmarked…
