2014 All-Star Game — Koji Uehara of Boston Red Sox named to American League team to replace Masahiro Tanaka

BOSTON — Red Sox closer Koji Uehara was added to the American League All-Star team on Wednesday, replacing New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka, who was placed on the 15-day diasabled list with elbow inflammation.AL manager John Farrell of the Red Sox had previously tapped Uehara as the first alternate replacement.In 40 appearances this season, the 39-year-old Uehara has allowed just six earned runs, striking out 52 batters in 41 1/3 innings with a 4-2 record, 18 saves, 1.30 ERA and 0.74 WHIP.This is the first All-Star team for Uehara since coming to MLB in 2009. In a decade with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, he was named an All-Star eight times.
