How does Munenori Kawasaki fit into Seattle Mariners’ plan?
|Munenori Kawasaki (aka Ichiro-lite) has been one of the bright spots of camp, with his energetic approach and outgoing personality as a non-roster invitee on a Minor League deal. The 30-year-old Japanese shortstop shows very good hands and instincts in the field and appears to be a good baserunner with the ability to steal bases and handle the bat.
He’s competing with Luis Rodriguez for the utility infielder’s role at this point and seems to have a very good chance of landing that job, with the skills to fill in at shortstop should Brendan Ryan have any further health issues with his shoulder. Kawasaki came with a reputation as a strong defender, but he’s looked pretty solid offensively as well so far.
