New England claim ex-Whitecap Lee Nguyen in Waiver Draft

Lee Nguyen wasn’t without a club for long. Roughly 24 hours after he was waived by the Vancouver Whitecaps, the New England Revolution claimed the attacker through the MLS Waiver Draft on Friday. “Lee gives us added versatility in the attack,” Revs GM Michael Burns said in a statement. “He is an effective player on either wing or up top, and he has great potential in MLS.”

Nguyen’s rights were originally awarded to Vancouver in a weighted lottery in December after the Dallas-area native signed a deal with Major League Soccer that same month. Nguyen had spent the past three years playing in his parents’ homeland of Vietnam.

But he ended being a victim of a logjam at his position, according to Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie. New England were more than happy to snap up the former PSV Eindhoven man as they reinforce their roster under first-year head coach Jay Heaps. The former US international will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his ITC. Per league and club policies, further contract details were not released.
