Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota: Mariotamania hits Hawaii businesses

Hawaii native Marcus Mariota has won the 2014 Heisman Trophy award. Mariota had earlier won the award for best quarterback in the nation.

Lots of local businesses created memorabilia to support Hawaii-born Marcus Mariota in his quest for the Heisman Trophy.

ButiGroove was packed Friday as fans picked up T-shirts designed in the Oregon quarterback’s honor.

“There’s a line here and that just shows you how important it is for Hawaii people to support him,” said customer Mike Antone. “We have somebody that we’re proud of and in the famous word that he uses, that he’s blessed, and we’re blessed to have him.”

Antone, like Mariota, is a graduate of Saint Louis School, and told KHON2 he’s been following Mariota for years.

“As Saint Louis fans, we follow our football players, yeah, and whenever they do well or even not doing well, we support them all,” he said.

Meanwhile, L&L is releasing a limited edition T-shirt on Saturday, from 10 a.m.-noon or while supplies last, at the L&L location in Iwilei only, at 801 Dillingham Boulevard.

The T-shirt will be free for the first 10 customers and limited to one per person.

After that, shirts will be given to customers who bring five canned goods or more for the Hawaii Foodbank, and a limited quantity will be for sale.
