NLCS Game 2: Kolten Wong’s walk-off homer gives Cardinals dramatic win

With an injury to Yadier Molina looming large, the St. Louis Cardinals evened their National League Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants with a dramatic 5-4 win Sunday night.

The Cardinals let go of a one-run lead in the ninth with their closer Trevor Rosenthal on the mound, but Kolten Wong delivered again, hitting a walk-off homer on the second pitch of the bottom of the ninth.

It was the Cardinals’ fourth homer of the game, each more clutch than the previous one. Matt Carpenter put the Cards on the board in the third inning with a solo homer, then Oscar Tavares hit one that tied the game in the seventh and Matt Adams gave St. Louis the lead in the eighth.

Things went sideways in the top of the ninth, as Rosenthal uncorked a two-out wild pitch that allowed Giants rookie Matt Duffy to score from second base and tie the game. Molina leaving with a strained left oblique weighed on the minds of Cardinals fans everywhere as backup catcher Tony Cruz couldn’t handle the pitch. Wong helped relieve those worries momentarily, but Molina’s status for the rest of the series is yet to be determined.

• It was Wong’s second big homer of the postseason. The first one came in Game 3 of the NLDS, a two-run homer in the seventh. Wong hit the second pitch he saw from former Giants closer Sergio Romo, lining it down the right-field line.
