Baltimore scores comeback victory after Wei-Yin Chen stumbles – The China Post
BALTIMORE–Taiwanese pitcher Wei-yin Chen had an uneven outing Friday in his second postseason game in the Major Leagues but the Baltimore Orioles managed to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five American League Division Series.
The 29-year-old leftie allowed only one hit in the first three innings but gave up five runs in the top of the fourth on five hits, including back-to-back homers by J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos.
Chen retired the next two batters but was replaced with Kevin Gausman after giving up another base hit. His afternoon outing at Oriole Park ended after 3 2/3 innings with 57 pitches. That compared with his first postseason game in 2012, in which he pitched 6.1 innings and allowed two runs against the New York Yankees to record his first win in the MLB playoffs after moving from Japan’s professional baseball earlier that year.
“Wei-Yin was real good for three innings, as good as you want to see,” said Orioles Manager Buck Showalter after the game. “But (he) just flattened out a little bit at the end.”
Chen said he was disappointed for not meeting his own expectations but credited his teammates for not giving up.
After Chen gave up a 2-0 lead, Baltimore overcame a three-run deficit in the eighth inning to win their second Division Series game in two days. The decisive moment came when pinch-hitter Delmon Young belted a three-run double off Tigers’ second relief pitcher Joakim Soria to make it 7-6.
Baltimore and Detroit will play their next game Sunday afternoon at the Tigers’ home turf Comerica Park.
