CLEVELAND, Ohio — Steven Kwan and the Guardians captured their first division title since 2018 by sweeping all six games on a road trip to Chicago and Texas, and Cleveland’s rookie sensation capped the run with an individual honor on Monday.
Kwan was named American League Player of the Week after batting .438 with two triples, two home runs, 10 RBI and four steals as Cleveland won six straight and clinched the Central Division on Sunday. Kwan drove in five runs in the clinching victory, including his first career grand slam to seal a 10-4 win against the Rangers.
Kwan logged a seven-game hitting streak from Sept. 17-23 that included five multi-hit efforts and 16 hits overall. He has 158 hits on the season, the most by a Cleveland rookie since Kenny Lofton’s 164 in 1992.
Kwan, the AL Rookie of the Month in April, has also received recognition from the league for two outstanding defensive plays this year: a diving catch on the warning track June 15 against Colorado and a foul pop that he snagged just before crashing into the stands on Aug. 26 in Seattle.
He is the second Guardians player to win the award this year, joining José Ramírez who won it twice (April 17, May 31).
Pete Alonso of the Mets and St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols shared the award in the National League.
