Timmy Chang is now the new Offensive Coordinator at NCAAIII Emory & Henry
|Early Monday afternoon, Timmy Chang tweeted that he had been officially hired as the new offensive coordinator at Emory & Henry.
Hours later, an official within the E&H athletic department confirmed via text that the news was official with an announcement to come Tuesday.
Late Monday night, E&H head coach Curt Newsome said that Chang began his first day on the job at 7:30 a.m. Monday and will leave for a recruiting trip to far Southwest Virginia early this morning.
“Timmy is a ball of energy and a very smart person,” Newsome said. “Any school would be lucky to have a coach like him, and I know that we’re excited. He’s a great guy.”
The 34-year-old Chang, who passed for over 17,000 yards at the University of Hawaii and still holds several NCAA Division I passing records, attended the same high school in Honolulu (Saint Louis School) as 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and current NFL quarterback Marcus Mariota and former E&H offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann.
After tryouts with three NFL teams, Chang played in NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League before serving under offensive innovator June Jones at Southern Methodist University and working as the offensive coordinator at Jackson State University the past two years where he directed the run-and-shoot offense.
“Timmy has already been studying our game films and he has met with some of our players,” Newsome said. “He will bring some of the run-and-shoot concepts to what we’ve been doing with our run-pass-option on offense.”
Under Stutzmann’s “Spread-and-Shred” attack, the Wasps featured one of the most prolific offenses in NCAA Division III.
Stutzmann accepted the job as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Hawaii on Jan. 31.
“We’re going to keep the same terminology on offense and just do what we do,” Newsome said. “Timmy will bring some tweaks to areas like passing routes.”
Newsome said it helps that Chang has the background as a quarterback coach. Stutzmann had previously worked with receivers before coming to Emory.
“Craig did a great job here and we will definitely miss him, but we’re excited about Timmy as well,” Newsome said.
Newsome added that Stutzmann’s brother, Billy Ray, will move from the role as defensive backfield coach at E&H to receivers coach. Newsome told the Bristol Herald Courier in early February that he had offered Chang the job as offensive coordinator, but was awaiting approval and Chang’s acceptance.
The E&H head coach said Monday night that he was not ready to announce anything new on the search for a new defensive coordinator.
