Devin Setoguchi could get career back on track with Toronto Maple Leafs

Former eighth-overall draft pick Devin Setoguchi could be looking to get his NHL career back on track with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 28-year-old used to average over 30 points per season, but his production numbers have declined ever since his second season in the league, when he posted 65 points in 81 games with the San Jose Sharks.

Setoguchi played in just 12 games last season with the Calgary Flames and failed to register a point.

It seems Setoguchi might have struggled with alcohol or addiction issues per a Tweet from Glenn Campbell of CTV Calgary.

If the Leafs give Setoguchi a tryout at training camp, it could be a low-risk, high reward move. Setoguchi was placed on waivers last season and went unclaimed, so it would be reasonable to expect that the Leafs could sign Setoguchi to a one-year, low-cost deal and give him a chance to prove that his personal issues are behind him. If his troubles on the ice were indeed related to off-ice issues, the Leafs might just end up with a 30- or 40-point scorer in him.
