Ryan Nam Signs with the Washington DC Current for 2015 Season
|Formerly a member of the DC Breeze, Nam also plays club ultimate for the D.C. men’s team, Truck Stop. This will be Ryan’s first season in Major League Ultimate.
“I decided that the Current was the best place for me to improve as a player because I get to train every week with some of the most talented ultimate players in the country,” said Nam. “I am excited to play the pro season with many of my Truck Stop teammates and under the coaching of Will [Smolinski] and Keven [Moldenhauer].”
Originally from Sparta, N.J., the 23-year-old Nam graduated from George Washington University in 2014. In addition to Truck Stop, he played for the D.C.-area open team Swell in 2012.
In 11 games last season with the Breeze, Nam scored 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists) and made 10 defensive plays. At 6-foot-1, Nam will bolster the already towering Current defensive line and provide strong handling capabilities.
“Ryan is a young player that has very good throws and has a instinctual gut feeling on defense,” said Assistant Coach Will Smolinski. “He will be a good fit as somebody who can cover handlers or cutters, capitalize on other teams’ miscues and then play fast break offense after the turnover. If Nam works towards his potential, he could be a player that five years from now is one of the best in the country.”
The D.C. Current coaching staff is gaining a reputation for recruiting and developing young talent from the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Coaches Moldenhauer and Smolinksi see Nam as a promising player who can deliver on both sides of the disc.
Nam himself understands that in order to improve his game early in his career, signing with the 2014 MLU Champions is the right move.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing with the disc in my hands and I look forward to helping the D-line capitalize on forced turns and convert break opportunities,” said Nam. ”I’ve built my game around being a hard and diligent worker and am looking forward to joining one of the most talented D-lines in the MLU.”
