Sonya Thomas upset by Miki Sudo in Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

There was a bigger upset than just a few stomachs at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Friday.
Miki Sudo topped reigning champion Sonya Thomas in the women’s division of the competition making her the first new winner since the women were given a separate stage to compete in 2011.
The fourth-ranked Sudo ate 34 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Michelle Lesco came in third with 27 hot dogs, Thomas consumed 27 and 3/4 hot dogs.
“To be the first person to beat Sonya Thomas at hot dogs is surreal,” she said. “I think both of us are hoping to break the existing world record of 45 in 10 minutes but weather conditions got in the way but we’ll definitely be back to set a higher number.”
Sudo missed the competition last year after she withdrew eight days prior to the event due to some personal issues.
