Midfielder Alec Sundly selected by New England Revolution in the 2nd round of the 2014 MLS draft
|COACHES’ BREAKDOWN: Described as a “leader,” a “winner,” and having the “heart of a champion,” Sundly was a vital cog in midfield for a Cal team that spent most of the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Sundly is about as steady a defensive midfielder you can find. He’s quick, good in the air, tough, and connects his passes well. With the talent that the Golden Bears had on their team this year, Sundly has been overlooked frequently, but there are some who think that he may have looked better as a player this year because Cal was such a good team. Sundly is not a box-to-box player, and is not an out-and-out defender. While he is tough, he may not the bite that MLS-level defensive midfielders like Kyle Beckerman or Ozzie Alonso have. Sundly may be steady, but hasn’t convinced everyone that he’s spectacular yet. “He’s a 7 out of ten all over the field,” one coach said. “Connects well. Covers a decent amount of ground. Reasonably tough. Over the course of a game, he probably does 90 percent of the things he does correctly.”
