Devin Setoguchi traded to Winnipeg Jets for draft pick

The Winnipeg Jets have acquired Devin Setoguchi from the Minnesota Wild for a 2014 second-round draft pick. The Jets announced the deal on Friday.

With only eight forwards under contract already for next season and Alex Burmistrov possibly bolting to the KHL, the Jets really needed to do something. Instead of overspending on the litany of free-agent forwards, however, Winnipeg was able to get a serviceable forward at the cost of just one draft pick.

Setoguchi is due $3.25 million next season, the last on his three-year deal which goes for $3 million against the salary cap.

Though his production has continually dropped since his 31-goal, 65-point season in 2008-09, Setoguchi should be able to help boost Winnipeg’s scoring depth and certainly helps fill an immediate need.  In last season’s strike-shorten year, Setoguchi had 13 goals and 14 assists.

A deal like this seems much more sensible for the Jets than getting involved in the free-agent frenzy on Day 1.
