Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez IV Undercard: Filipino Ernie Sanchez start off undercards with big victory
|Las Vegas – Fight night here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena started auspiciously for the Filipinos. Ernie Sanchez, the first of five Filipino fighters who will be seeing action tonight, won the curtain raiser with a unanimous decision victory over Coy Evans.
Sanchez had a tough time to start the fight as he had trouble figuring out how exactly he would connect against the sleek Philly fighter. He even got staggered in the second round, which made him tie up Evans. Things turned around in the third as Sanchez connected with a hook that hurt Evans. The young Filipino fighter smelled he had Evans in trouble so he pushed on the gas pedal. He finally floored Evans with a right straight in the middle of the round.
Evans managed to beat the count and even fought back towards the end of that round, but Sanchez already had the momentum. Throughout the fight, Sanchez connected with lead rights that bothered Evens. Although he was hit with a couple of stiff uppercuts from Evans, Sanchez dictated the tempo and connected with the better punches for the remainder of the fight.
The judges Lisa Giampa and Jerry Roth submitted identical scores of 78-73 while Tom Cheatham had 77-74 for Sanchez, who was trained by Nonoy Neri, one of Manny Pacquiao’s assistant trainers. With the victory, Sanchez upped his record to 14 wins against three losses. Evans on the other hand dropped down to 10 wins, two losses, and a draw.
