Wei-Yin Chen named best import by the Sporting News
Taiwanese left-hander Wei-Yin Chen of the Baltimore Orioles has been selected as the best import by the Sporting News in its first-half review of the American League.
Chen was cited by Stan McNeal of Sporting News.com as he looked at the performance of first-year players from abroad in the first half of the major league season.
In the best import category, McNeal said Yu Darvish, a Japanese pitcher with the Texas Rangers, had lived up to expectations, but no one knew what to expect from the 26-year-old Chen, who is entering the All-Star break with a 7-5 record and a 3.93 ERA.
“When you consider the three-year, US$11.888 million deal is about US$95 million less than the Rangers have invested in Darvish, it’s safe to say that Chen has been the wiser investment so far.,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, McNeal also named Robinson Cano of New York Yankees as the American League’s first-half MVP and
