Tony Nguyen – first asian coach of a professional football team
|What comes first in sports, a great team or a great coach? Does the coach make the team great or is it the talent of the team that makes the coach great? It is a tough question that has plagued many arguments over the “greatness” of coaches in bars all over the country. The LFL isn’t immune to this question, especially for expansion teams like the Minnesota Valkyrie and head coach Tony Nguyen.
“Coach {Tony’s] coaching style can be described by two simple words: The Basics! He preaches technique and doing things correctly,” said WR Whitney Meierotto, “That way when we get tired or frustrated, our technique is the one thing that we all can fall back on and rely on to carry us through.” At practices and training camp it would echo through the practice dome, “Technique, Technique, Technique!” coach Tony Nguyen would bark. Though Coach Nguyen has a stable of impressive athletes on his team, he isn’t going to let them rest on their athletic ability alone, but rather hone that ability into positional and football related skills to ensure maximum performance.
Wide receivers will need to run crisp routes, tackling must be executed properly, and plays run correctly. “Know the game and know your job. Coach Tony reminds us every day the importance of our positions on the field,” said RB Leekplay Paye. The quarterback on the team is small and athletic pinay Joseline Bandijo, who has been thrust into the starting role to due an injury to the other QB.
