PGA Tour Welcomes Record Number of Players of Korean Descent
|The PGA Tour will kick off on Friday in Hawaii with 28 winners from last season competing in the curtain-raising Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
A record-high number of golfers of Korean descent will vie for honors this year. Of the 11 on the list, the six Korean nationals are: 42-year-old Choi Kyung-ju, better known as KJ Choi; 2009 PGA Championship winner Yang Yong-eun, 40; Wi Chang-soo, or Charlie Wi, also 40; Bae Sang-moon, 26; Kang Sung-hoon, 25; and 21-year-old Noh Seung-yul. Bae and Noh are making their PGA Tour debuts this season.
Korean-Americans Anthony Kim and Kevin Na, also known as Na Sang-wook, are joined by two newcomers from Q-School, John Huh and Richard Lee. Korean-New Zealander Danny Lee has also advanced to the PGA Tour.
The Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which will be held on the Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Golf Course in Hawaii, will feature Choi Kyung-ju, the winner of last year’s Players’ Championship, and Kevin Na, who collected the first PGA title of his eight-year career in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
