UFC 141 results: Dong Hyun Kim cruises in decision win over Sean Pierson
|LAS VEGAS – Dong Hyun Kim successfully rebounded from his first career loss and scored a shutout unanimous-decision victory over Canadian welterweight Sean Pierson. The bout was part of UFC 141, which took place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. It was the final of three bouts that streamed on Facebook prior to the night’s Spike TV and pay-per-view broadcasts.
The fight ultimately was decided in the second round with one big blow. However, the fighters traded blows early, and Kim got the slight edge with some powerful kicks. Late in the round, he then secured a standing guillotine choke before tossing Pierson to the mat. However, Pierson quickly took his back, and as his opponent got to his feet, the Canadian worked from the back for the choke but couldn’t cinch it before the round ended.
The second round also saw more sparring form both fighters. However, late in the round, Kim unloaded a vicious crane/front kick to the jaw that badly wobbled Pierson. Clearly dazed and on shaky legs, Pierson was in trouble but was saved by the bell.
Although Pierson had shaken some of the cobwebs by the third round, Kim again edged ahead in the final frame. His strikes were crisper, his conditioning better, and a mid-round takedown came at a key time. After the ref stood the fighters following a lull in action, Kim avoided any substantial blows and fended off takedowns before unloading some late kicks.
In the end, the judges scored it 30-27 across the board for the Korean fighter. “I really concentrated on my [stand-up] for this fight, and I’m going to show why I’m the ‘Stun Gun,'” Kim said through a translator. “I really practiced [that kick] a lot with my coach.” Kim (15-1-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) gets back in the win column following a UFC 132 knockout loss to former WEC champ Carlos Condit. Pierson (11-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) suffers his second straight loss and faces an uncertain future with the organization.
