Lyoto Machida gives Jon Jones trouble but unable to get back belt – UFC 140
|Round 1 of the title fight saw Lyoto Machida show his striking skills as he put Jon Jones in trouble with a flurry half way through the round. Jones was visibly stunned, off balanced, and frustrated. Machida was able to avoid big strikes and looked to be well on his way to a successful showing. Unfortunately, there were more rounds to the fight.
Round 2 saw Jones come out and change things up a bit. He was able to figure out Machida and start having some success. Eventually he gets Machida to the ground and lands a nasty elbow that cuts Machida on his forehead above the right eye. It was a deep gash that caused the ref to stop the fight and have the doctor take a look. After they restarted, both men eventually split to the middle and looked to exchange strikes. Jones was able to land a short left that rocked Machida who went down. Jones jumped on him but Machida was able to get up. However, as he was getting up, Jones locked in a standing guillotine and put Machida to sleep on his feet. The ref breaks the hold and Machida collapses to the mat.
