Jessie Sun makes U20 USA Frisbee team

Watchung Hills Regional High School senior Jessie Sun has made the Women’s U-20 National Ultimate Frisbee team and will take part in the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Poland in August.

Sun, who began her ultimate Frisbee career as a freshman on the Warriors’ Ultimate Team, was selected as one of 24 from among 100 players to try out in Florida recently. She was also among the 100 chosen to attend the tryouts from more than 400 nominated players.

“There was the inevitable initial awkward atmosphere on the first day of tryouts, but by the end of the second day, we were all cheering each other on and hugging each other as if we’d played with each other before,” Sun said. “Those two days proved to me that the Spirit of the Game and the community of ultimate is so inviting and comforting for anyone, anywhere, in any given situation.”

Following her sophomore year, Sun earned a spot on the summer Delaware Valley Youth League team, an elite New Jersey/Pennsylvania select team which competes against teams from all over the country. Her involvement in that league led her to seek the next level of the sport.

Sun becomes the second Watchung Hills player to make the national team and the fifth to be invited for tryouts.

“Jessie is a testament to the hard work and character that we expect from our program, and she is a great role model for our younger players to look up to,” said Ken Karnas, who coaches Sun at both the high school and elite team level. “Because of Jessie’s involvement, many girls will see that the dream of playing for a National team can be a reality.”
