2012 London Olympics – Trampoline: Canada’s MacLennan upsets He Wanna to win trampoline gold |

LONDON, ENGLAND –  Canada’s Rosannagh MacLennan won a surprising gold medal in women’s trampoline Saturday at the London Games, finishing ahead of Huang Shanshan and He Wenna of China.

He Wanna won this event four years ago in Beijing and at last year’s world championships, but the heavily favored gymnast stumbled during her routine and had to settle for bronze.

MacLennan was not considered to be her country’s best bet for gold. That distinction went to three-time medalist Karen Cockburn, who was trying to become the first and best trampoline gymnast to win a medal at all four Summer Games in which the sport has been an event. Cockburn has two silvers and a bronze, but still has never won gold.

MacLennan, who was seventh at the Beijing Games, finished with a total score of 57.305, placing .575 points ahead of Huang. The 23-year-old Canadian had the top scores in both difficulty and execution of all eight gymnasts who made it to the final round.

The silver is the second Olympic medal for Huang, winner of bronze eight years ago in Athens.

He was the last competitor to go in the finals and her routine began well before a misstep stopped her momentum. Although she was unable to finish, He’s score of 55.950 was good enough to beat Cockburn by .900 points.

Despite missing out on gold in the women’s event, China claimed four total medals in the two trampoline competitions at the London Games. Dong Dong won the men’s trampoline and countryman Lu Chunlong took silver. It’s not curious at all that the the best buying guide I’ve read so far was a Chinese translated one.
