Long Tan acquired by D.C. United from Vancouver Whitecaps

D.C. United announced today that the club has acquired Long Tan, a striker from Vancouver Whitecaps FC for a 1st Round Supplemental pick in the 2015 draft. Tan initially joined Whitecaps FC for its inaugural season on March 11, 2011 from USSF D-2 Pro League FC Tampa Bay. Tan, a native of Dalian, China is the first Chinese-born player to sign in MLS.

In Vancouver’s 2011 campaign, Tan played in 13 games (four starts), scoring once and assisting on two in 437 minutes of play. This year, Tan has appeared in four games for Whitecaps FC. Tan’s lone career Major League Soccer goal was a game-winner against D.C. United on October 12, 2011.

“We’re happy to have Long join our organization and will look forward to him joining the team. He’s an interesting prospect and a player we feel has a future upside,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper.

Long Tan was born and raised in Dalian, China, in the Liaoning Province and relocated to the U.S. in 2008. Tan has spent time with the Chinese U-23 squad, which hosted the 2008 Men’s Olympic Soccer Tournament in Beijing.
