DUSSELDORF, Germany (Kyodo) — Japanese ace Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from the World Team Cup getting underway in Germany this weekend due to an abdominal injury, organizers said Friday.
Nishikori’s withdrawal means he will sit out his third tournament in a row. Go Soeda, Tatsuma Ito and Bumpei Sato will play for Japan on its debut at the May 20-26 World Team Cup. Nishikori was forced to retire in the first set of his quarterfinal match at the Barcelona Open in late April with the injury. He is currently in the United States and aiming to be fit in time for the French Open, the second major of the season starting on May 27.
Eight teams are divided into two groups at the World Team Cup, with the top team from each group contesting the final. Japan has been drawn against the Czech Republic, the United States and Argentina in the first round
