UFC on FX 2 main card recap: Yasuhiro Urushitani vs Joseph Benavidez

Both Yasuhiro Urushitani and Joseph Benavidez wasted little time establishing their kicks to kick off the second flyweight bout in the history of the UFC. Benavidez remained aggressive as always chasing down Urushitani with kicks and coming forward with constant pressure early. Urushitani remained calm and showed off his tremendous ability to land his right hook while retreating against the attack of Benavidez. Benavidez continued to come forward, shooting in for a takedown against the cage. He dropped for a throw and took the fight to the ground, but could not keep Urushitani grounded once there. After both guys got back to their feet, Benavidez connected with a knee on the break as Urushitani attempted to circle away. Benavidez then reset and shot in for another takedown. Urushitani was able to fight off the initial attempt, but Benavidez kept working finally dragging his opponent to the mat. Benavidez went to work with elbows before transitioning to a guillotine attempt from the top. He used the guillotine to transition to mount, forcing Urushitani to roll, giving up his back as a result. Benavidez locked up the rear-naked-choke but ran out of time as the bell sounded on the first round.

To start the second round, Urushitani uncorked an ill-fated high kick that Benavidez countered perfectly with a monstrous right hand, dropping Urushitani where he stood. Benavidez followed up with a flurry of punches to the head of his dazed opponent, prompting a referee stoppage.

The impressive victory for Benavidez (16-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) guarantees him a date with Demetrious Johnson in the finals of the flyweight tournament to determine the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.
